SOLD OUT – 1968 BMW R69US

  • The R69US model with the telescopic front fork: production 1100 units 1968-1969 is a transitional design between the Earles Fork model 1955-1969 and the totally redesigned/5 model starting 1970….

For sale a fairly original paint 1968 BMW R69US. Triple matching numbers, fresh tune-up recently that included rebuilt (matching) carburetors, adjusted valves, timing, fresh oil. Everything works except the horn, it is a common for those horn to fail after so many years of use.

The R69 was BMW’s fastest road machine from 1955-69, with 100-plus MPH performance and a comfortable, reliable, smooth ride guaranteed. The R69 was BMW’s range leader and a “ne plus ultra” motorcycle; there was simply no other two-wheeler on the road which could compare, from any other manufacturer in Europe, England or the U.S. With a totally enclosed transmission including shaft drive, and exceptional casting and build quality, it was never questioned that the R69 would not only cruise comfortably down the freeway at more than 90 MPH, it would also stop more quickly than other any large-capacity machine, and at the end of the journey, not a drop of oil would be shed in the driveway or hotel forecourt. The original R69 was upgraded in the early ‘60s with improvements to the engine and transmission, becoming the R69S. These were popular machines and 11,417 R69Ss rolled out in their 9 years of production, but by the late 1960s, the writing was on the wall, and a new silhouette was required if BMW was to shed its growing image as an “old man’s bike.” The first step was to add telescopic forks to the model range in 1968, the US models that gave the line an upgraded, slightly more contemporary look. The US models handled a little better than the Earles-fork machines—you could still order the Earles fork if you had a sidecar to haul—and were an important step towards modernizing the brand, which came fully to fruition in 1970 with the introduction of the R75/5.
